Day 5: Rescued relatives from Puerto Rico

Day 5: Rescued relatives from Puerto Rico

31 Days of Gratitude
Join me as I celebrate all I have to be thankful for during the month of October. Why October instead of November? One more day! Enjoy and be blessed.

We had no idea my father’s cousins, who are in their late 60s, were in Puerto Rico for Hurricane Maria until they posted several photos from Puerto Rico on Facebook. The photos spoke for themselves. They were shocking, almost unbelievable. Fortunately, they were within several-hours walk from San Juan and were rescued from the island by one of the few commercial airlines leaving Puerto Rico about two weeks after the hurricane.

The sense of urgency was very high because two of them had heart conditions that made it impossible for them to stay. One couple got out and made it to Ft. Lauderdale to stay with their eldest son. We are still waiting to hear if the other was able to make it out.

I want to thank Spirit airlines and Royal Caribbean cruise lines for making evacuation possible. The great Puerto Rican diaspora is well underway. The island will never be the same. They haven’t suffered a direct hit since the 1930s. I’ve never visited but now I think I’ll have to wait several years before they get out from under and the United State’s only Tropical Rain Forest is replenished.
