Day 27: Humor

Day 27: Humor

31 Days of Gratitude
Join me as I celebrate all I have to be thankful for during the month of October.
Why October instead of November? One more day!
Enjoy and be blessed.

Growing up, my escape came in reruns of old movies. That’s when I discovered Jerry Lewis, Don Rickles, Carl Reiner, Jonathan Winters, Sid Caeser, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Dom DeLouise, Bill Cosby, Redd Foxx, Flip Wilson and others. They kept it coming for days. However, I began to discover a younger generation of comedians on e.g., the first season of Saturday Night Live, Fridays and In Living Color.

Suddenly, the humor was becoming more real, more rigorously honest, a serious commentary on society. It was God’s subtle way of making me see things for what they really were. Some things were not so funny but oh the irony.

Today, I have to give props to a number of comedians, especially those of color. They are keeping it real. These comedians are raw and don’t give a hoot what anyone thinks. People such as:

Eddie Murphy
Jamie Foxx
The Wayans Brothers
Tommy Davidson
Arsenio Hall
Chris Rock
Gabriel Iglesias
Kevin Hart
Dave Chappelle
Kat Williams
Whoopi Goldberg
Tracy Morgan
Wanda Sykes
Aries Spears

Honorable black guy mention
Robin Williams
(He’s just universally perfection. I don’t see anyone arguing about this one.)

But seriously, the cast of SNL is keeping me alive these days. The political crisis in America is painful but people like Leslie Jones, Michael Che, Maya Rudolph, Kenan Thompson, Kate McKinnon, Bobby Moynihan and others are keeping things in perspective.

They are making sure laughter, the best medicine, is dispensed in overdoses. They see the irony and remind all of us that we are not crazy. Life sure ain’t a bowl of cherries and humor will never be out of vogue.

  1. I laughed out loud over this article. (…don’t give a hoot… Ha!) Plus, you don’t write 9,000 words so it’s convenient/accessible for the reader. Each sentence flows into the next and the information you’re sharing surely helps the mentally ill. Like me. Kudos for leaning into your heritage. You are you. And that’s so refreshing.
