Day 20: No-name College education

31 Days of Gratitude
Join me as I celebrate all I have to be thankful for during the month of October.
Why October instead of November? One more day!
Enjoy and be blessed.

I am the first in my family on both sides to achieve a bachelor’s degree. It was an amazing day when I graduated. My future was secure and so was my family because I sought and acquired a higher education. Only one other cousin has a bachelor’s degree.

With degree in hand, it has made finding a job within my field so much easier or so I thought. I’m actively looking for something permanent and now, unlike only 20 years ago, a bachelor’s degree isn’t enough. Now employers want candidates with all of the qualifications. Google, for a period of time, was picky about pedigree. In other words, only Ivy League school graduates were getting job offers.

Fortunately, Silicon Valley entrepreneurs have finally figured out it’s not the degree stupid. It’s whether you finish what you start. It’s how well do you think on the fly and how creative are you. There is no degree for that but when you have a degree from No-name University, there’s a good chance you come with a brain outside the box.

I’m grateful for my No-name College University degree. I stand out among a sea of overqualified Ivy League candidates. Yay!
